Kiteboarding at Kirkland's Juanita Beach Park

Jeff Heinz, Kirkland resident and photographer, captured some amazing images of  kiteboarders flying through the air at Juanita Beach Park. Kiteboarding is a water sport that uses the wind to pull a rider through the water on a small kiteboard (similar to a wakeboard). Strong winds are all these athletes need to get airborne, and Juanita Beach seems to have the right conditions for this sport. Kiteboarding truly is a spectacle to watch.

We thank Jeff for sharing these and his other photos with us.

Even though the sun was out yesterday afternoon at the Juanita Beach Park, it was still pretty darn chilly with the wild wind blowing off the lake. As my wife and I approached the park, we could see the white caps on the waves, glistening in the afternoon sun. It looked like the perfect recipe for a few kite boarders, so my camera and I decided to brave the wind and scramble out to capture some of their amazing skills. These guys are obviously not rookies because they were driving these things with unbelievable precision. This allowed them to get pretty close and give me the opportunity to capture some of the action. I wanted to be able to share this little slice of the day, as seen thru my lens. Special cameo appearance by “Hawk” Fletcher and one of our local Eagles flew over as well.

Note: These photos were not “photo-shopped”, these guys were flying as high as they appear, even the guy that is above the tree line!
