Unique tools deployed by WSDOT help keep workers and drivers safe
Have you seen the Scooby Doo Mystery Machine driving around Kirkland the past few days? We have heard reports of it being spotted on 3rd Street north of downtown as well as sightings on I-405. The van - painted to look like the one seen in the Scooby Doo cartoons and movies - is actually a Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) vehicle, working in conjunction with the Oregon State Department of Transportation to efficiently measure roadway stripes.
This Scooby Doo Mystery Van look-a-like vehicle, uses a laser attached to the van to measure the brightness of stripes as it drives along the highway. Previously, our crews used a device that required us to close a lane and physically stand over the striping to measure the reflectivity. Thanks to this partnership, we can borrow equipment that will save money and keep our drivers and crews safe. View our video to see the van in action.
