Peter Kirk Park is getting a new playground
If you have driven by Peter Kirk Park lately you may have noticed the playground is fenced off and crews are working in the area.
The Parks & Community Services Department allocates resources through the Capital Improvement Program to refurbish one or two play areas each year as part of our ongoing investment in infrastructure. They currently maintain 24 playgrounds throughout the Parks system.
The playground is scheduled to be complete and operational by early March. Later this spring (possibly early summer) you will see crews doing the same thing to the Houghton Beach Park playground.
The average playground serves the community ten - seventeen years depending upon variables such as: location, amount of play, and component’s make-up. The on-going inspection program generates a Structural Health report for each play area. When a playground starts to become a continual investment of replacement parts and staff resources, it becomes a greater risk for users and ultimately ends up becoming a candidate for replacement.
