Kirkland Storm Update #2: City’s Response Efforts; Additional Closures; City Council Holds Public Hearing Tonight

The National Weather Service advices that a major winter storm will move into western Washington from the south late tonight and Wednesday, January 18, 2012, bringing widespread heavy snowfall to much of western Washington. The City of Kirkland offers the following updates:

Road and Sidewalk Maintenance · All roads in Kirkland city limits are currently open at this time. · City Road Maintenance crews will be on duty through the night and will continue implement the “Priority Snow Removal Route” using three plows, two de-icer trucks and two 10-yard sanding trucks. · Property owners adjacent to sidewalks are responsible for keeping them clear of snow and debris. · When the temperature reaches freezing, steep roadways that were maintained earlier in the day may become hazardous. · Road hazards within Kirkland can be reported to the 24/hour Public Works Maintenance Line at 425-587-3900.

City Meetings · The City Council study session and regular meeting will be held this evening with Special Presentation agenda items to be rescheduled to the February 7 meeting. Public comments regarding the Public Hearing on Zoning Code Amendments for the Light Industrial Zones can be emailed to prior to the public hearing which begins at approximately 7:30 p.m. The City Council meeting can be viewed live on Comcast Channel 21/Frontier Channel 31 or streamed live from Kirkland TV On-Demand. · The Library Board Meeting scheduled for Wednesday, January 18 is cancelled.

City Building and Facility Closures; · Kirkland Municipal Court will be closed on Wednesday, January 18. · Kirkland Cemetery is closed until further notice.

City Service and Program Cancellations

· If Lake Washington School District cancels school and before and after school activities on Wednesday, January 18, then all City recreation programs and classes will be cancelled. Call the City Recreation Hotline at 425-587-3335 for updates. · Every effort will be made to complete construction inspections that have been requested for Wednesday, January 18. If inspections are not possible due to road conditions, applicants will be notified. To check the status of your inspection request, call the Building Services Division at 425-587-3600 between 7:00 and 7:30 a.m. on Wednesday, January 18.

Garbage/Recycling Collection Service · Customers should check Waste Management’s “Weatherboard” for collection service notices and updates at or call 800-592-9995.
