Garbage Pick Up Resumed Today for Residential; Commercial Service Continues; City Puts WM on Notice to Assess Performance Fees

On August 1, 2012, Waste Management Inc. resumed residential garbage-only collection service in the City of Kirkland. Residential customers whose collection day is Wednesday (today), Thursday (August 2), Friday (August 3), Monday (August 6) and Tuesday (August 7) can set out their garbage (green carts). Customers will be notified when recycling and yard waste collection services resume. WMI continues to serve commercial customers. On July 31, 2012, Kirkland officials notified WM of its intent to assess performance fees. After a seven day grace period, performance fees may be levied for lack of residential and commercial garbage, recycling, and yard waste service. In July 2011, the City entered into a seven-year agreement with WMI for garbage, recycling, and yard waste residential and commercial collection services.

On July 25, 2012, Teamsters’ Local 117, whose membership includes recycling and yard waste truck drivers for Waste Management, Inc. (WMI), initiated a labor strike. Teamsters’ Local 174, whose membership includes garbage truck drivers are honoring the Local 117 picket lines. Waste Management has implemented its strike contingency plan and additional groups of experienced drivers are joining the workforce to increase service capacity.
