Public invited to comment on proposed Residential Suites zoning code amendments

Planning Commission public hearing Oct. 4, 7 p.m.


 Kirkland’s Planning Commission is inviting citizens to an Oct. 4 public hearing to discuss the possibility of a new kind of residential development called “Residential Suites” (also called single room occupancies by some jurisdictions). The meeting begins at 7 p.m. in the Kirkland City Council Chambers at City Hall. Specifically, the Planning Commission is considering whether to amend the zoning code for some downtown and Totem Lake areas to allow residential suites. Residential suites falls somewhere between a hotel use and an apartment use, where a  small unit—between 120 square feet and 350 square feet is rented for longer periods than a hotel. The units typically share bathrooms and/or kitchen facilities and rent for substantially less than traditional apartments. The City Council requested consideration of code amendments to allow Residential Suites after reviewing similar regulations and projects in the City of Redmond.  The Council's interest is based on the goal of providing a diversity of housing types that provide a range of affordability.  Inherently smaller and more affordable than typical apartments, Residential Suites could provide additional housing choices to Kirkland residents and workers.
